Tallahassee, Fla. - With the height of the summer travel season coming up, state parks are increasing their fees starting Wednesday.

The Florida Park Service says entrance fees for vehicles are increasing an average of $1 to $3, though some parks will remain free.

Camping fees are going up an average of $4 a night, cabin rental fees will tick up an average of $10 a night, and annual passes will cost $60 a person and $120 a family.

The increase is taking place Wednesday because it coincides with the beginning of the state's budget year.

"We haven't had a fee update in about five years," said Jessica Kemper, Florida Park Service spokeswoman.

Various other fees will also be going up at many parks.

Kemper said the fee increases were originally conceived last fall as the parks service tried to brainstorm ways to deal with possible budget cuts. The increases will provide about $7 million. The service gets about half of its $81 million operating budget from fees.
