Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. -- More than six years after debate began in Rancho Palos Verdes on the once-contentious issue of recreational vehicle parking, the City Council has quietly approved a program designed to keep RVs off city streets.

With no public comment and minimal debate, the council gave its final approval Tuesday to a program that will require owners of oversized vehicles to obtain annual permits that allow limited RV parking.

The program, estimated to cost the city more than $82,000, follows the institution of similar restrictions in other South Bay cities.

"We have parts of our community where people have suffered for years and years with these kind of vehicles as a blight," Clark said at a budget meeting last month. "It's really a problem that needs to be addressed."

The new restrictions come after years of debate over various options offered by the Traffic Safety Commission and local RV owners. Last year, Clark even proposed an overnight ban on parking for all vehicles in the city.
